WEIGHT:
The steel roofing system weighs in at a total weight of 2 lbs. per
sq. ft. The shakes weigh approximately 1 lb. per sq. ft. The total
of 3 lbs is well below the minimum dead load rating of 7 lbs. per
sq. ft. that your roof was built to support.
STRUCTURAL: The steel roofing system is attached directly
to the rafter works (rafter and space sheathing boards) by nailing
a 1 by 4 with a 16-penny nail through the shakes and through the
rafter works with an inch of penetration. The system adds 300% shear
strength to the exterior walls of your home.
TERMITES/INSECTS: Wood shake roofs in Northern California
are made with either redwood or cedar. The two reasons for this
are that both redwood and cedar hold up to the elements significantly
better than other types of wood and they also have a powerful resistance
to insects. i.e. cedar closets and cedar chests.
FIRE: Steel roofing systems provide excellent protection
from exterior fires, have helped contain interior fires, and don't
allow the fire to be easily spread to other homes in the neighborhood.
The 2 1/2 inch dead air space is filled with insulation and doesn't
allow fire to spread through this space.
ROT: Dry rot is really mis-named. It should be called wet
rot. The reason for this is that three things must take place in
order to have dry rot (wet rot). 1. The wood must be wet. 2. The
wood must be wet for a substantial continuous period of time. 3.
The wood must be exposed to the fungus that eats through the wood.
Dry rot is typically found in the eaves of a home either due to
a failed guttering system or where unpainted or failed eave boards
have been wet and exposed to exterior fungus. i.e. trees, bushers,
leaves, etc.
MOSS/MILDEW/PLANT LIFE: The steel roofing system is totally
water tight but not totally airtight. This allows water to evaporate
out from under the tiles and kills and prevents plant life from
existing. No additional moisture can enter the system.
SHAKES: The shakes have nothing to do with the installation
either structurally or functionally.
RADIANT BARRIER: The shakes allowed to remain in place
will act as a radiant barrier keeping excessive hot air out in the
summer and warm air in during the winter. This results in dramatic
energy savings and/or more comfort.
TEAR OFF: Tearing off the existing roof results in a more
costly and less efficient roofing system. Also it exposes the interior
of your home to the elements, increases the risk of additional damage
done as a direct result of the tear off, and it will spread dust,
dirt, and other such debris into the attic/crawl space and around
your home.
